Cleaning my garage

Sorry folks I have been away for awhile cleaning my garage. What a mess it was! I had already cleaned it out this spring and had everything sorted out and filed neatly in their own storage boxes.

But with everything it got away on me again when I started doing yard work. One thing that has plainly come to my attention is, " you have to have a garden shed for storing outdoor tools in". This is where most of the mess has been coming from for me. So my next project will be either building my own shed for storage or buying a pre fab garden shed.

I feel for me this is the only way I will be able to keep my garage area clean for longer than 2 months.

Stayed tuned I will be back in a couple of days with some new ideas.

Making a room in the garage

If you are going to make a room in the garage for teenagers to hang out in a furntiure cover should be used on sofas and chairs. The reason is if you haven't taken out the garage door and built a wall then dirt and dust will creep in underneath the door. It would be easier to keep fabrics on furniture cleaner with a furniture slipcover. For more information about slipcovers go to our main page on our site about sofa slipcovers.

Building an entire room is probably not needed if the garage is just going to be used as a place to hang out for short periods of time. To make the floor more comfortable an area rug could be put down overtop of a rug pad to make it softer.

The important part will be keeping the garage organized and clean, which can only be done by using storage racks and garage ceiling racks to keep bins and bikes out of the way.

Teenagers don't mind being in a room that is not decorated as long as there is a soft place to sit. They are more concerned with privacy than decorating. Although this isn't true for teenagers bedrooms.

Start with a plan

I looked out in my garage the other day and just turned around. Cluttered garage floor, stuff in bins on shelves that I don't have the slightest idea of what is in there. Hand tools all over my workbench and the kids bikes that are always in my way.

My wife and I decided that this was the year that we are going to get organized in the garage and stay that way. We have an interior decorator friend that was telling us that the main reason people have trouble keeping this area clean and neat is that we don't treat it as another room in our home. Take any room in your home and you have probably come up with a few interesting storage ideas when you started running out of room. The garage should be treated no differently than any other room in your home.

Shelves and racks are no different than what you would use in a bedroom or in the basement storage room. garage cabinets serve the same purpose as a dresser. It is there just to give an item that belongs in that room a place to be put away for when it is needed.

Start your garage organizing by making piles in the middle of the floor. One for garbage, one for a garage sale and the other for things you need to keep. Things that are already stored in boxes can be left for another day. Plan to have a garage sale once a year in the spring. After you have your benches, wall shelves and old cabinets cleaned out get rid of everything that you have not used for at least 12 months. You can do this by either giving it to a thrift store or the more popular way a garage sale. Plan to use the money you have earned here to buy proper shelving and garage cabinets that fit into your other home furnishings. Your garage should be decorated as an extension for your home or at least compliment the room that you enter your garge from.

After this is all done, sit down and make your plan on where you would like everything thing to go and most importantly what you want to use the garage for. If you thing that you would like to use partly as an extra room for teenagers or a quite work area for projects, don't plan to park the car in here. Notice I haven't said start putting things away, the reason is if this is going to be a long term garage storage solution then it takes time to get this all organized, usually a couple of weeks. Just think of different ideas of what you would like to do and then what you can actually afford to do. There are ways to incorporate these different ideas and solutions to fit your budget and we will look at those in the next couple of weeks as I clean my own garage.

Garage storage solutions

This spring I am going to come up with a better solution to storing half my house in the garage. That is my new years resolution! I have finally clued into the idea that for planning a good system of storing my things in the garage that you have to treat this room as any other room in your home.

Your garage should be an extension of your home and other decorating ideas. Use cabinets and shelving that compliment the colors of your walls and furnishings that are immediately seen from the room you enter the garage from.

But before you rush out and buy stoarge cabinets, shelving and ceiling racks, careful planning must be done first. In the coming weeks we will be looking at planning your garage storage based on the seasons and how you plan to use your garage. Its not just for parking cars in anymore.
