Garage Storage Cabinets

Recently I have been looking at my garage more as an outdoor room than another storage area. I found by thinking this way it is much easier to decorate and think of what type of storage cabinets would be best.

The first thing you need to do is make sure your garage is clean and tidy before you start. Its very difficult to plan anything out unless you see exactly what you are working with. Go here to read our article on planning a garage storage area .

Why you need a well organized garage

If you are thinking of selling your home or are in the business of flipping houses after a small renovation this is a very important step. People like to see a very neat and tidy garage that looks like it is part of the home. This means your wall colors and cabinets should coordinate with the interior. Garage cabinets will almost make the sale all by themselves. Think about how good you feel when you are looking at this room when it is clean and well organized. It is a very good selling point and could put your home first on someone's list. When people see a clean organized garage they will think that the rest of your home is looked after just as well.

About basic garage cabinets

Start with a few base cabinets along one wall. These can be 2 or 3 drawer units that have a large cabinet area which shuld have at least 2 doors and at least one shelf inside. After you have chosen the base then match up with either a cabinet above or a peg board unit.

Hutches are a good option they can be with doors but can be open with shelves. They should be painted the same color as the base cabinets. Hutches generally come in two varieties, primarily pegboards and those that are primarily shelves. Both are intended for different uses. The pegboards are intended for those that will be using the hutch in a workspace capacity. Pegboards are great places to hang tools, small equipment boxes, and excess cords or wires.

Tall garage cabinets are usually about as wide as the bottom cabinet, and are effective for storing many items using shelving. These are ideal for situations when you don't have a lot of floor space but need to store a lot of items. These are great for someone who is looking to either store small items, or to leave laundry items like detergent in bleach in plain view, and high enough off the ground to avoid children.
